One Piece, being the shōnen genre that it is, hosts an absurdly-strong cast of characters, almost all of whose physical abilities and special powers reach well into the realm of the superhuman and beyond. Charlotte Katakuri is among the series’ most powerful of the heavy hitters, making use of his physical prowess, weapon proficiency, and special powers specific to his series to stand head and shoulders above a great majority of the cast. All that said to preface he’s a monstrous powerhouse and shouldn’t be taken lightly by anyone when it comes to crossing him or engaging him in a fight. (Unless said anyone is from the upper echelons of superhuman strength, such as DragonBall or Saint Seiya characters and plenty of Marvel and DC cast members. Aka: people that treat blowing up planets and crushing dimensions normal feats of strength.)

As one of the Big Mom Pirates Three Sweet Commanders, Katakuri's power and authority in the Big Mom Pirates is second only to his mother's, Charlotte Linlin (aka: Big Mom), and equal to his sister Smoothie and brother Cracker, his fellow Sweet Commanders. As Totto Land’s Minister of Flour, Katakuri has governing authority over Komugi (Wheat) Island, one of the archipelago nation’s 35 islands. His bounty of 1,057,000,000 berī indicates that the World Government within One Piece views him as extremely dangerous and a threat to their very stability. Even Capone Bege of the infamous Worst Generation (twelve top rookie pirates famous for their bold actions against the World Government and each possessing bounties of over 100,000,000 berī) considers Katakuri a monstrous threat. Katakuri holds the deserved reputation for being the strongest of the Three Sweet Commanders and the greatest product the Charlotte Family has ever produced. Even as a child, his strength was compared to that of a “monster,” and until his first loss against Luffy at the age of 48, Katakuri had never lost a single battle throughout his life, a long and perfect record of victory described by his brother Oven as “legendary.”

Charlotte Katakuri is a very complex character. Sure, that can be said about a lot of characters, if not all of them, but “complex” being said about a shōnen manga/anime character who shows up for one arc is kind of surprising. On the surface, Katakuri is a rather straightforward character; he displays a defined personality and doesn’t stray too far from it. However, beneath his outer character, the second son of the Charlotte Family has some very hidden depths, something that is rather unusual for the adversarial characters normally found within One Piece. Katakuri’s personality, both external and internal, stem from belonging to and living in a very unique family and even more unique circumstances, which must be discussed for a moment before proceeding.

Katakuri is part of both his family, the Charlotte Family, and his pirate crew, the Big Mom Pirates. Both the Charlotte Family and the Big Mom Pirates are ruled by the matriarch, Charlotte Linlin (aka: Big Mom), Katakuri and his siblings’ biological mother and the captain and founding member of the Big Mom Pirates. The family and crew live in Totto Land, an archipelago (group of closely scattered islands) ruled by Big Mom and governed by her children. In the One Piece world, pirate crews make a living on the seas, with the top four pirate crews ruling so much territory and being so strong, they are referred to by the rest of the world as “Yonko,” the “Emperor of the Sea.”

However, unlike every known pirate crew before Big Mom’s introduction, the Big Mom Pirates are literally composed of all of Big Mom’s children and her allies. Allies are brought into the crew via marriage. Big Mom hands over one of her children to be married (mostly without taking their own interest into consideration) to either the leader of or high up member of the prospective ally. Once the marriage is finalized with a grand ceremonial Tea Party, the ally is then legitimately part of the Big Mom Pirates. This results in the entire crew technically being blood-related and considered one large family under Linlin, with death being the only way to escape membership. Thus, Katakuri, like the rest of his siblings, has lived within the family and pirate crew within the realm of Totto Land for his entire life, with no room for departure or growth out from under his mother’s fist or away from his family. This obviously makes for one hell of a life…

Katakuri is an extremely tall, large, and muscular man with short spiky crimson hair and two symmetric scars on both sides of his handsome face. At over 16 ft, he stands nearly three times Luffy's height, and is slightly taller than his younger triplet brothers, Daifuku and Oven, and his Longleg sister, Smoothie, who are each incredibly tall themselves. He has long legs, with his thighs being equally as long as his lower limbs. His mouth, which is usually covered up, contains extremely pelican eel-like sharp teeth and is capable of expanding to an enormous size. He has sharp, intense, crimson eyes, highly arched eyebrows, and prominent lower eyelashes under each eye. He wears a massive light ragged scarf that covers his mouth and reaches his shoulders. He also wears a torn leather vest with CHARLOTTE on the back that exposes most of his torso, dark gloves and pants, a belt with a skull-shaped buckle, and spiked boots with spurs. His torso is very defined, having prominent pectorals and abdominal muscles covered in pink tattoos on the left side, and he wears a spiked bracelet on his arm as well as knee pads with a single spike on them. While traveling, he wears a dark cloak over his normal outfit.

Charlotte Katakuri is the second son of the Charlotte Family, and the elder triplet brother of Daifuku and Oven. He is one of the Three Sweet Commanders (スイート3将星 Suīto San Shōsei) of the Big Mom Pirates as well as the Minister of Flour (粉大臣 Kona Daijin), governing over Wheat Island in the archipelago nation of Totto Land. The Big Mom Pirates are the crew of Charlotte Linlin, more widely known by the epithet of Big Mom, matriarch of the Charlotte Family, captain of the Big Mom Pirates, ruler of the Totto Land territory, and one of the four Yonko—considered Pirate Emperors of their respective territories and influence—of the manga/anime world of One Piece. Katakuri plays a central role as a major antagonist of the series’ Whole Cake Island Arc.
